After coming within a whisker of winning the Super Bowl, the San Francisco 49ers are suffering through a nightmare season in 2024.
They have had to deal with a vicious string of injuries to a long list of star players, including a case of Achilles tendonitis that kept running back Christian McCaffrey out of their first eight games of the season.
McCaffrey seemed to be getting himself back into gear in Week 13 against the Buffalo Bills, but he pulled up in the second quarter with what head coach Kyle Shanahan later said was a PCL injury.
McCaffrey will be out for at least six weeks as a result, which means his season is essentially over.
To make matters worse for the Niners, backup running back Jordan Mason is also heading to injured reserve after suffering a high ankle sprain.
“Two lost RBs,” ESPN insider Adam Schefter wrote on X.
Kyle Shanahan said that Christian McCaffrey did injure his PCL and it is a 6-week recovery. His season now looks like it’s over.

McCaffrey is arguably the biggest part of San Francisco’s offense, as he is not only an incredible rusher but also someone who can run routes and catch passes.
Mason filled in very well for McCaffrey early in the season and has accumulated 789 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 153 carries.
The 49ers were already without left tackle Trent Williams (ankle), left guard Aaron Banks (concussion) and numerous other key players on both sides of the football.
After losing to the Bills, the Niners now have a 5-7 record and are in last place in the NFC West, making them a long shot to reach the playoffs for a fourth straight season.
