The New York Jets are a team that could look a lot different next season after yet another disappointing showing this year.
There was initially some real hype and excitement coming into this season following quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ Achilles tear in Week 1 of 2023, but that hype and excitement quickly evaporated, leaving only the harsh reality of a 3-9 record.
Robert Saleh was fired weeks ago as New York’s head coach, and there is now a report that Mike Vrabel is open to taking their head coaching job, but only under one condition — he will have to approve of whomever they hire to be their next general manager.
“ESPN’s Rich Cimini’s said on the Flight Desk podcast that former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel has told people that he is open to taking the job. However, he would only fill the vacancy if he approves of the general manager hire,” Robert Sanchez wrote.
Vrabel, who coached the Tennessee Titans from 2018 to 2023, has emerged as arguably the hottest head coaching candidate on the market, outside of perhaps Bill Belichick, the legendary six-time Super Bowl champion.
The Jets also fired Joe Douglas, who had been their general manager a couple of weeks ago, and with both Saleh and Douglas gone, there is the opportunity for the franchise to start anew and make sure it has a coherent and unified philosophy on how to build and how to go to work each day.
A lot of the blame has fallen on Rodgers, who has been accused of passive-aggressively dictating the franchise’s affairs, but some have also blamed owner Woody Johnson.
There is no doubt that the Jets have plenty of talent, but they need the right leadership to make all that talent come together.
Of course, there is also the question of whether Rodgers wants to remain in New York past this season.
