Caleb Williams’ journey from high school champion in the D.C. area to USC standout and now Chicago Bears rookie quarterback has been nothing short of remarkable.
While his college career saw him win 23 of 33 games and clinch the 2022 Heisman Trophy, the NFL has presented a challenging landscape that even he didn’t quite anticipate.
Recently, Williams opened up about the Bears’ current seven-game losing streak, admitting it’s a completely unprecedented experience in his football career.
“I’ve never had a streak like this of losing,” Williams said, per Pro Football Talk. “This is my first time of being a part of something like this, of losing, and this streak.”
Despite the team’s struggles, Williams maintains a sense of optimism that resonates through the locker room.
The season started promisingly with a 4-2 record, but has since spiraled to a 4-9 situation.
“There’s belief, hope and faith that we’re going to get this right. However that may happen, that’s how it’s going to happen. That’s kind of where I’m at with it,” William added.
For long-time Bears players, losing streaks aren’t exactly a new phenomenon.
The team has experienced at least one stretch of four or more consecutive losses every season since 2019. This year’s streak, however, feels particularly challenging.
Williams himself has been a bright spot amid the team’s difficulties.
He’s steadily improving, throwing for 2,746 yards and 16 touchdowns, though he’s also accumulated five interceptions.
A notable challenge has been the league-leading 56 sacks he’s absorbed, highlighting the immense pressure he’s facing as a rookie quarterback.
At 23 years old, Williams is gradually finding his footing in the NFL. While becoming more comfortable in the pocket, he’s simultaneously wrestling with the emotional weight of the ongoing losing streak.
The Bears’ season might be testing Williams, but his attitude indicates he’s far from defeated.
