Entering the 2024-25 NBA season, there was a prevailing thought that the Atlanta Hawks would emerge as sellers at the trade deadline.
The Hawks shipped Dejounte Murray to the New Orleans Pelicans in the offseason, leaving room for speculation that Trae Young could also be on his way out at some point.
Atlanta has spent the past few seasons near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings and could have very easily started a full rebuild in hopes of landing another high lottery pick.
However, the Hawks have done almost the exact opposite as they’ve become one of the most exciting and feistiest teams in the league.
Atlanta recently defeated the New York Knicks on the road to advance to the semifinals of the NBA Cup, signaling it should be considered as a threat in the playoffs.
In fact, the Hawks have put together one of the best records in the league since Thanksgiving.
“Over their last 8 games, the Atlanta Hawks are 7-1,” NBA on TNT wrote on X.

Young and his teammates have completely turned around the Hawks thanks to a solid offense coupled with a surprisingly stout defense.
While Young mans the controls on the offensive end, the Hawks have a bevy of wings in Jalen Johnson, Dyson Daniels and Zaccharie Risacher who can give opposing players fits defensively.
On paper, Atlanta has the necessary pieces to have a chance in any postseason series, though the roster likely could use a couple more pieces to get it over the hump.
But this recent run is impressive and indicative of a good team lurking in the playoff race.
