One of the biggest penalties that a defender can commit in the NFL is pass interference.
A defensive pass interference occurs when a defender prevents a receiver from getting the opportunity to make a catch before the ball gets there.
In other words, if the defender were to tackle the receiver before the ball gets to him, that would be a penalty.
In the NFL, defensive pass interference penalties are spot fouls (the ball is placed where the foul occurs).
Former NFL head coach Jon Gruden wants the league to make defensive pass interference a 15-yard penalty instead.
“My biggest concern is pass interference in pro football. I would make it the college rule, honestly, because some of these pass interference calls are impacting the game,” Gruden said on “Pardon My Take.”

Gruden noted how there should be a common thread for officials when they make the call seeing as every officiating group tends to call pass interference a little differently.
Gruden’s opinion is valuable considering he is a Super Bowl-winning head coach.
It also isn’t necessarily fun to see a game end on a 60-yard pass interference call that sets up an easy field goal for the win.
The impact of pass interference is such a big deal in today’s NFL that the league might need to pay greater attention to it, especially with the playoffs right around the corner.
If a team’s season happens to end on a spot penalty because of a poor pass interference call, the league office might be in some hot water.
