For most of NFL history, kickers used to be automatic from within 40 yards.
Extra point attempts were also almost a given.
Now, reliable kickers might be a dying breed around the league.
Notably, the San Francisco 49ers have suffered way too often because of that this season.
Jake Moody has struggled for most of the year, and that showed up again in the loss to the Miami Dolphins.
The kicker missed an attempt from 41 yards that would’ve made the game 16-13 in the third quarter.
His team was trailing by six, and that field goal could’ve swung momentum back in their favor.
That wasn’t the case, and the Dolphins eventually rolled past them with a 29-17 win.
Following the loss, HC Kyle Shanahan called him out, and it seems like he’s finally had it with him.
“It wasn’t good out there missing that kick. I don’t know what exactly happened on the snap and the hold, but that’s one he’s gotta make,” he said.
Kyle Shanahan was asked what his confidence level was in kicker Jake Moody:

The Niners took Moody in the third round of the NFL Draft last season.
He was very promising in his first campaign, drilling 84% of his field goal attempts and missing just one of his 61 PATs in the regular season.
His struggles showed up in the playoffs, though.
He missed at least one field goal in two of their postseason games and one extra point in the Super Bowl.
This time, he’s made just 76.7% of his field goal tries, which ranks No. 29 in the entire league.
Considering Shanahan’s latest statement, it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise if he’s not with the team next season, and that seems to be a league-wide issue right now.
