One of the hottest head coaching candidates right now in the NFL is Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator of the NFC North champion Detroit Lions.
Along with defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who himself is a desirable head coaching candidate, and head coach Dan Campbell, Johnson has overseen a dramatic turnaround in Detroit, where the team has quickly gone from a laughingstock to a Super Bowl contender.
The New England Patriots are one of several teams looking for a new head coach, and Johnson reportedly interviewed with them on Friday morning.
According to Dianna Russini, the interview was “great,” and it bodes well for him, as it was exactly how the interview had to go for him to have a shot at landing the job, per Carlos A. Lopez.
The #Patriots had a “great” meeting with Ben Johnson this morning, according to @DMRussini.
Johnson apparently had to blow away the Krafts during his interview, so this is good news for those rooting for the #Lions offensive coordinator. pic.twitter.com/YNdZJKP0bl

Johnson became the Lions’ offensive coordinator for the 2022 season after he had been their tight ends coach for two years and their offensive quality control coach in 2019.
Prior to that, he spent seven years on the Miami Dolphins’ coaching staff.
In three years as Detroit’s offensive coordinator, Detroit has finished in the top five in both points and total yards, and 2024 was the second year in a row they finished first in the NFC North.
Even though they have been dealing with many injuries, especially on defense, they’re still the favorites to win the Super Bowl championship in the minds of many.
New England could have their quarterback of the future in Drake Maye, but they have many needs, and that starts with a head coach who will also be a franchise leader for many years to come.
