The New York Yankees pivoted quickly to a Plan B this week after watching Juan Soto leave them for the New York Mets on Sunday by signing former Atlanta Braves left-handed starter Max Fried to an 8-year, $218 million deal to help anchor the Yankees rotation for the better part of a decade.
He was one of the biggest starters on the market and had many teams clamoring for his services, but one surprising team reportedly surfaced as an aggressive candidate to sign Fried before the Yankees finalized a deal.
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale shared on X Wednesday morning that the Athletics were “one of the most aggressive teams in the Max Fried” sweepstakes before he signed with the Yankees.
Believe or not, one of the most aggressive teams in the Max Fried sweepstakes were the Athletics before he signed his 8-year, $218 million deal with the Yankees.

That is shocking news, given how cheap the A’s have been over the years, but it’s a good sign for the team’s future.
Maybe they are finally ready to push the envelope and spend some money.
The A’s raised plenty of eyebrows when they signed fellow free agent starter Luis Severino recently to a 3-year, $67 million deal, the largest contract the A’s have given out throughout their history.
Baseball is better off if every team is trying to spend to compete instead of sitting idly and watching the big-market teams consistently pillage the small markets.
The sport is much better off if the Athletics are turning a corner before moving to Las Vegas.
Moneyball is dead, and we’ll see if the A’s continue to make some noise in free agency this month.
