The ongoing head coach search for the New York Jets just got more interesting, with Aaron Rodgers spotlighting Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson’s exceptional play calling in Week 16.
Johnson, who climbed the ranks from quality control coach in 2019 to offensive coordinator in 2022, has earned league-wide respect for his innovative approach and strategic brilliance.
Rodgers couldn’t contain his admiration for Johnson’s offensive wizardry during a recent episode of “The Pat McAfee Show.”
The Jets quarterback was particularly impressed by a creative play that unfolded during the Lions-Bears matchup.
“The stumble play which was unbelievable. Literally I was watching sitting on the bench they put it up during our game. I was like, they just faked the [expletive] fumble and threw leak for a touchdown. How incredible was that? Pretty incredible. That offense does something crazy every week,” Rodgers shared.

He further praised the Lions’ offensive system, adding,
“They always got different things. I love Jared [Goff], love what they’re doing. Really cool play design.”
The play in question was pure football artistry. Quarterback Jared Goff executed a convincing fake stumble while running back Jahmyr Gibbs hit the ground.
The Lions’ offensive line sold the deception by yelling “ball,” creating the perfect misdirection that left tight end Sam LaPorta completely uncovered for a 21-yard touchdown strike.
It was another masterclass in deception from Johnson’s playbook.
This latest display of offensive ingenuity has only intensified speculation around Johnson’s candidacy for the Jets’ head coaching position.
With Rodgers openly admiring Johnson’s work, the Lions’ offensive coordinator appears to be catching the right attention as the Jets continue their search for new leadership.
