The New York Yankees have had a rough week after watching superstar Juan Soto jettison across town to the New York Mets on a shocking 15-year, $765 million deal.
This has left Yankees fans with a massive black hole in their lineup and in the hearts of Yankees fans nationwide.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman spoke about the process on Wednesday and shut down one untrue rumor circulating since the deal went down.
Cashman said on MLB Network Radio that the Yankees never had a chance to match the Mets’ offer, noting “it was reported we had a chance to match, that wasn’t true.”

Cashman said this was a “unique negotiation” and mentioned how the team was flying blind throughout the process because they didn’t know the other offers.
He said over the last week, the Yankees were simply in “wait and see” mode as Soto deliberated about his decision, but nobody knew what any other teams were offering and had to do their best without knowing what they were up against.
The Yankees reportedly offered 16 years for $760 million, while Mets owner Steve Cohen stayed true to his word when he said he refused to be outbid on Soto.
It is impossible to replace Soto, but the Yankees must move on and determine who will replace him in the lineup next season.
It’s unfortunate that things have unfolded this way if you’re a Yankees fan, and who knows if the team would have matched the Mets’ offer if they were given a chance.
