The New England Patriots are wrapping up another disappointing season, though that was to be expected with first-year head coach Jerod Mayo and a young roster.
New England is in the midst of a multiyear rebuild that will require patience, though the organization has to be pleased with what it’s seen from rookie quarterback Drake Maye.
Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, started the season on the bench behind veteran Jacoby Brissett but was handed the keys to the offense midseason.
While Maye looked shaky to begin his pro career, he’s started to show why he was worth the high draft pick.
Unike Brissett, Maye has a cannon for a throwing arm but also the size and athleticism to make plays on his own when the pocket breaks down.
In the Week 17 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Maye found Demario Douglas for a 36-yard touchdown that set a new franchise record.
“That’s QB Drake Maye’s 8th straight game with a touchdown pass, a new Patriots franchise rookie record,” Mike Kadlick of Sports Illustrated wrote on X.

It was a great pass from Maye, who launched the ball in the middle of the field to Douglas, who secured the grab for the score.
It was one of the only highlights from the first half for New England as it struggled to get anything going against Los Angeles.
Though the Patriots might not be happy with how the season unfolded, they can take some solace knowing that Maye looks like a legitimate franchise quarterback.
