The Atlanta Falcons were at the center of the storm last offseason when they signed four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins to a major four-year deal.
After signing him, the team drafted rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in the first round of the NFL Draft.
Since then, the Falcons have flirted with the playoffs but failed to make it, benching Kirk Cousins in the process.
Falcons GM Terry Fontenot spoke about the future of Cousins in front of the Atlanta media on Thursday.
“We’re comfortable moving forward with him as a backup,” Fontenot said.

The only problem with this situation is that Cousins signed a $180 million deal in the offseason, with $100 million being guaranteed.
That is way too much money for a backup quarterback, and the Falcons will either have to rework the contract, trade him, or let him go.
This is now Penix’s job, and if Atlanta’s plan succeeds, it could be his job for a long time.
It will be interesting to see if Cousins tries to force his way out of Atlanta if he believes he still has something left in the tank.
The former Michigan State star will turn 37 before next season, and after being benched, he now has some motivation.
Teams like the Las Vegas Raiders, New York Giants, Tennessee Titans, and others could need some experience under center and might be willing to pay a lot for it.
