The New York Jets might be eyeing their next big move at quarterback as Aaron Rodgers approaches what could be his final game.
With the Jets perhaps needing a new signal-caller, an intriguing possibility has emerged.
Sam Darnold’s career renaissance with the Minnesota Vikings has turned heads this season, and with rookie J.J. McCarthy waiting in the wings, NFL circles are buzzing about McCarthy’s potential availability.
The situation has sparked speculation about whether the Jets should make a bold play for the young quarterback.
“So if the Jets are sitting there, say, picking eight or picking nine, depending on how things shake out … why not take that draft pick, trade it to the Vikings, get a legitimate first-round quarterback, and have your quarterback of the future?” SNY insider Connor Hughes said, via Jets Videos.
Could the Jets trade a potential top 10 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to the Vikings for J.J. McCarthy?@Connor_J_Hughes on Jets Class: https://t.co/h6UbkaC6V0 pic.twitter.com/3isaXTsle9

The timing could work perfectly for the Jets.
McCarthy’s ongoing recovery from a knee injury wouldn’t force them to rush him onto the field. So, with veteran Tyrod Taylor still under contract, the Jets would have the luxury of time.
More importantly, they’ve built an impressive offensive foundation featuring dynamic playmakers Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson alongside a solid receiving corps and offensive line that should be ready to support any future quarterback.
This strategic approach offers both immediate stability and long-term potential for the Jets, who currently are slated to pick No. 7 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft and likely won’t have a shot at top QB prospects Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders.
However, orchestrating a trade for McCarthy likely would require significant draft capital to convince the Vikings to part with their promising rookie.
