The 2024 season was not ideal for the Dallas Cowboys.
Despite having some hope and optimism heading into the year, the Cowboys couldn’t gain any ground or traction throughout the year.
It quickly became clear that they were not going to be a playoff contender, making many fans wonder what the future of the team would look like.
Mike McCarthy’s name was tossed around as a potential candidate to get fired after the 2023 season, but the Cowboys kept him around for one more year.
He is again being mentioned as someone that the Cowboys might cut ties with, but it doesn’t seem like they’ve made a decision either way.
Ian Rapoport said as much in a recent segment of “NFL Today” on the NFL Network, indicating that both sides still have some work to do.
“The only two ways that this can go are, McCarthy and the Cowboys are having no conversations, obviously a sign that they are not moving forward together. Or, what’s really happening, is that they are in constant conversation,” Rapoport said, adding, “He’s got leverage, they know he’s got leverage.”

McCarthy could still be given the boot over the next several weeks, and judging by the Chicago Bears requesting to interview him, he is a desirable candidate to some potential suitors.
However, Jerry Jones and his staff could elect to make McCarthy their head coach for more years by signing him to an extension, assuming they believe that he’s the best person to lead this team moving forward.
