The New England Patriots understand that the organization will need some time to get back to competing for a Super Bowl title, and they seemingly bought into that idea when they elevated Jerod Mayo to be their new head coach.
Mayo took over for Bill Belichick, who led the franchise to six Super Bowl championships, and he inherited a young roster to work with.
New England also selected its quarterback of the future, Drake Maye, with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Mayo and Maye have shown glimpses of what their partnership can produce, though it hasn’t resulted in many wins so far.
In fact, the Patriots haven’t looked very organized on either side of the football in recent weeks, which has caused some murmuring about Mayo’s job security.
However, it appears that New England owner Robert Kraft is playing the long game with Mayo.
“While there hasn’t been a public vote of confidence for the head coach from the Kraft family, Patriots leadership is standing by Mayo. Just as discussions about the next NFL hiring cycles heat up, team owner Robert Kraft has privately assured those close to him that he’s committed to giving his first-year head coach the time and resources he needs to grow into the role,” Dianna Russini of The Athletic wrote.
It’s tough being a first-time head coach in the NFL, so it’s not a real surprise to hear that the Kraft family is being patient and giving Mayo time to improve on the sidelines.
