Karl-Anthony Towns spent the first nine years of his NBA career with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Towns was a deeply loyal player, even when the team had few chances of success.
Despite that, he was traded to the New York Knicks last summer, a startling choice that shook up both teams.
Now Towns is speaking about the trade that changed his life and he’s clearly still surprised by it.
Speaking with Jon Krawczynski and James L. Edwards III, via Legion Hoops, Towns said:
“There was no part of me that was willing to leave. And life had a different path for me. I was stunned. I’m still stunned I’m in a different jersey.”

That is a very frank, stark comment from Towns and it makes it clear that he was willing and wanting to ride with the Timberwolves for the rest of his career.
This obviously wasn’t his choice, but he has made the most of it.
His first year with the Knicks has been explosive and he is averaging 25.0 points, a league-high 14.2 rebounds, and 3.4 assists a game.
All of those numbers are higher than what he did with the Timberwolves over the last few seasons.
Maybe it’s because he has something to prove, or maybe his fit with the Knicks is better, but Towns is starting a new chapter of his career that is very exciting.
Still, he obviously was blindsided by this monumental change.
Some Timberwolves fans are saying their team made a huge mistake by letting Towns go.
This statement from the star makes it clear that he would have continued to play for the team for a long time if they wanted him to.
